The next club meeting’s presentation is on HSMM-Mesh.  HSMM-MESH is a high speed, self discovering, self configuring, fault tolerant, wireless computer network (digital data network) utilizes very low power. It can run for days from a fully charged car battery, or indefinitely with the addition of a modest solar array or other supplemental power source. The focus is on emergency communications.

The system is built using older generation Linksys WiFi routers such as the WRT54G, WRT54GS and WRT54GL. Only specific versions of the models will work. It operates on channels 1-6 of the 2.4GHz ISM band, which overlaps with the upper portion of the 13cm amateur radio band. To maximize bandwidth, the system uses spread spectrum across the six channels.

HSMM-MESH has been utilized to provide high-availability networking capabilities in grid-down, disaster and other emergency scenarios. It is also a fun way to utilized your allocated amateur radio bands in a new and interesting way.
